The Lisa Whirlpools

The Ancient Washing Machine.

Whirlpools set in motion sophisticated hydrotechnical installations, with shingle gutters tamed by small bays, hydraulic wheels with wooden blades, staving baskets of planks or wickerwork, a complicated and steep trail, designed to restore the mountain rivers’ turmoil. The foaming stream swirls around rugs, blankets, woollen garments, or carpets. It cleans, thickens, and adorns them, and they become soft, fresh, and tender under the pressure of kinetic energy.

The Lisa Whirlpools are the oldest peasant hydraulic assembly in Romania. Using a technology designed by the Dacians, sometime in the first century of our time, the current Whirlpools were built more than 150 years ago and preserved their purpose in the community until 1989. Later, the “snarling wolf”, the flax opener, the ring with spindles, or the water-animated installation were set in motion, especially in demonstration sessions. But the craft was passed from generation to generation to the fifth one. The one who watches over the household today, Angelica Lungociu, has been awarded the title of living human treasure, a distinction by which UNESCO protects the world’s treasures.

The whirlpools (vâltori) had two main components: the stream that brought water from the mountains and the “vâltoria” itself. This was a circular construction made of wooden planks, fenced with iron rings, which gave the water a circular movement. The fabric was washed in this “vâltoria” for a longer period, until it became stiff and “entered the water.” After washing, the fabric was put out to dry. The textiles were then pulled over the brambles to make them soft and fluffy.

Tradition and Spirituality

Craft.

These “vâltori” were a popular gathering place for the inhabitants of the Făgăraș region, who came here to wash their wool and socialize. In this way, the Vâltorile Lisei came to symbolize the community and local traditions.

Today, tourists who wish to take a step back in time and learn more about the history and traditions of this region can visit the Vâltorile de la Lisa. They have been meticulously restored so that they can be appreciated in all their glory. Visitors can see how these washing machines were used in the past, hear stories about how they were an important part of the community’s life, and even try washing wool in the traditional way.
