The Brâncoveanu Monastery from Sâmbăta de Sus

Mănăstirea Brâncoveanu

The silence touches the towers of the Brâncoveanu Monastery, to then embrace the green alleys coated with roses, French marigolds and rows of colorful Sweet Williams. This church, built by the Lord of Wallachia, Constantin Brâncoveanu, was demolished in 1785 and, after the emancipation of Transylvania, was rebuilt on its old unshaken foundations.

As the shade of the trees closed over, a heavenly domain spread at the foot of the mountain, with indoor parks inspired by corners of heaven, orchards, gardens, and trout-laden lakes. Blessed for more than four centuries by history, prayer, and zeal, the place has deep roots and a miraculous heart. A spring of running water carries wisdom from ancient times, giving travellers the joy of today and faith in tomorrow.

The patronal feast of the monastery is the Dormition of the Mother of God, on August 15th, and every year a celebration is held in honor of this feast, where pilgrims from all over the country come to pray and reflect.

The Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery is also known for the painting school that functioned here, which has been reinstated in modern times. The painters who worked at the monastery created impressive works of mural and glass painting that continue to be admired and appreciated. The Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery is an important place for Orthodoxy, serving as a center of worship and spirituality for Orthodox believers from all over the country. Today, the monastery is inhabited by Orthodox monks who serve the local community and offer spiritual support for those seeking advice and guidance.
