Like a roller coaster on a monumental scale, the Transfăgărășan climbs in breathtaking serpentines beyond the clouds, to then plunge into a fairy-tale land, the green and miraculous garden of Olt. A string of great corners, draped over a mountain, with scintillating views as you ascend or descend.
The world’s most spectacular road races through forests towards the snow country, leaving behind glacial lakes and waterfalls, hurrying over bridges and viaducts, past dams, and through tunnels that cut through the mountains. A 152-kilometer journey through the Transylvanian Alps becomes a fabulous adventure in the majesty of nature, which reveals itself in thousands of breathtaking poses. The trail, adorned with protected areas and reserves, beckons many world travellers.

In the 1970s, this magnificent road was built—unfortunately, at the cost of many human lives. The Transfăgărășan fascinates with its steep mountain ridges, the Bâlea Waterfall and glacial lake, the vibrant colors of the flora, and the dramatic changes in altitude.
“A fabulous road, the most amazing one I’ve ever seen!”—this is how the route was praised by the British Top Gear team.
The road connects Transylvania with Muntenia and stretches over 151 kilometers. Starting near the village of Cârțișoara, it winds up through the Bâlea Valley, passing the tourist areas of Bâlea Glăjărie, Bâlea Waterfall, and Bâlea Lake–Capra. One of its most striking features is the 887-meter tunnel that links the Capra area to the glacial basin of Bâlea.
